As most Office 365 users know when they first encounter the platform, Office 365 is not a single program or really even a single platform, but a collection of capabilities that can sometimes seem a bit overwhelming.

This chart from our most recent research study shows a breakdown of usage.

I’m curious – where do you think there is the most untapped potential on the platform?

Hi Shawn,

Well, my 2 cents would be SharePoint and Planner.  I think there continues to be lots of opportunity for MS to continue to improve SharePoint, and thus for organizations to take better/more advantage of it.

As far as Planner, I think if MS continues to increase the interoperability between Planner, the other O365 applications and services, and MS Project, it could become one heck of a killer app.

Thanks Lorne,

I totally agree with you about the potential power in interoperability between the apps.

Onedrive and Yammer. Two ends of the spectrum. I actively educate the end user on both. Using Microsoft’s me, we, us mantra – lots of stuff works well in the middle ground of ‘we’, even if the user isn’t really paying attention they will have competent colleagues around them they are passively learning from. Onedrive and Yammer enable them to solve their own problems. So much of what we do in my org is community, albeit it’s a rather unfashionable label so I have to get the thesaurus out.
Me: you’ve described an outcome that could me met by a community
Them: pulling a face and thinking about hippies and tie-dye
Me: a network, a beacon, a think tank, a hub, a focus group etc
Them: I like it!
Me: great, let me show you the power of Yammer
Me later: evil laugh – more Yammer advocates for the Yammer God!

Ha yeah, I guess sometimes it’s all about what you call it. I’m in marketing, so I know all about the importance of the right label 🙂

Hey Sean,

O365 has so many hidden gems, it is always difficult to pick one specifically, since this always depends on business maturity and future vision. I’d have to look at several sides in order to give a proper answer;
– for business users, I’ve found that Forms can have a huge impact. we ask so often for feedback, or to fill in a list of things; forms makes it sooo easy to make it business worthy
– for support staff, government staff connecting to inhabitants I see the shine in their eyes when I show them Bookings
– management visions can be supported incredibily well via PowerApps and Flow (oops, Power Automate now)

my personal favorite is Bookings; soo easy, yet it can change the way you connect to people and how you plan support

Thanks Jim. It makes sense that answers may vary depending on maturity and vision, but I appreciate your recommendations.

I think there are two levels to this. First is workload (or product) which your graph indicates. However, more than that, there’s how those tools are helping move the business forward. A little more than a year ago I published Secret SharePoint which is a bunch of things that you can do with SharePoint that people don’t generally know about. I’ve even got a free email series that folks can sign up for at https://thorprojects.com/content/secret-sharepoint/

More broadly, folks don’t even know about the things they can do in Office client applications. My free email series with 30 tips is at https://thorprojects.com/content/30-office-tips-email-series/

My point isn’t to promote the emailing lists (they’re completely free) my point is that it’s too easy to have a system and not utilize it fully. The biggest gap — in my opinion — is the gap between the features the product offers and the solutions that we generate for our internal and external clients.

Thank you, Robert!

I just signed up for your Secret SharePoint email series – that’s an awesome idea for a content series. I’m excited to check it out.
