No Code Platform Recommendation

Hello,

I’m looking to develop a few apps for my company (about 200 employees) to help with projects like onboarding and safety documentation.  Our IT department here is overwhelmed attending to more business-critical needs and does not have the time to perform the work I am interested in as a citizen developer.

I’ve been researching some of the no code platforms out there and AppSheet looks like it may fit the bill.

Anyone else have experience with this platform (or others)?  I’d love to hear what you like and don’t like and what are some things I need to be especially aware of.

Thank you,

Darrell

Darrell,

I will make the disclaimer that I’m a Microsoft partner upfront.  Given that, I recommend the Microsoft 365 “Power Platform” which is the trinity of PowerApps, Flow, and PowerBI in the MS cloud. There are a bunch of reasons but the ones that standout most for me are:

  • PowerApps gives you the option to start from a model-driven perspective or a canvas app depending on your needs
  • Flow has at least a couple of hundred available connectors to a significant range of other applications that can supercharge its value
  • PowerBI is rapidly becoming the ‘go-to’ platform for low code/no-code reporting and analytics
  • The Power Platform sits on top of the M365 CDS (Common Data Service) which leverages the CDM (Common Data Model)
  • Obvious native Office, Office 365, SharePoint, and Dynamics 365 (CRM, Finance & Ops [aka AX], and Business Central [aka NAV]) interoperability

One thing to keep in mind is that if you want/need to integrate to on-premise apps/data stores you would need to look at getting your overworked IT folks to put in a Data Gateway.

Hi Lorne,

Thank you for your feedback.  A Microsoft solution does have the clear advantages, as you pointed out.  We run O365 in the Azure cloud and utilize SharePoint and PowerBI (dashboard creation) extensively.  Your insights confirm what I was leaning toward and I really appreciate your thoughts.

Regards,

Darrell

Darrell,

This will be the topic of discussion on our June 12 webinar. Your situation is similar to what we are seeing in many organizations: the line of business owners need to make important process changes but are typically at the mercy of their IT team to get it done. New tools are making it easy for the business owners to implement changes themselves. Hope you can tune in: https://info.aiim.org/striving-for-better-business-outcomes-who-isnt
