Dear All, I work for my company as and IT Administrator.
The IT Division which I work for is responsible to operate and maintain MS Windows based local area networks of the company.
Do you know any kind of application which has similar capabilities for the NTFS file-system like the Managed Metadata Service of SharePoint 2013?
(I mean providing a central database for all metadata, assigning metadata from the database for the files or their alternate data stream in the filesystem, and when a metadata changes in the database
the change will be applied in the metadataj of the files/alternate data stream also.)
Currently we use an MS Windows 2008 file server, a SharePoint 2013 Server and an Exchange Server 2010 to store and share files/items in NTFS file folders,
SharePoint sites and Exchange stores.
For Information Management purposes we use the Managed Metadata Service of SharePoint and the Enterprise Metadata columns to assign
consistent metadata to the list and library items in SharePoint (like documents, records, calendar, task and project list items etc.).
We use a hierarchical Business Classification scheme from the Managed Metadata Service to classify items in the lists/libraries of SharePoint.
The issue is that we do not have any tools/applications to provide consistent classification of the files which are on our file server.
I know that in the property pages of the files in the Windows Explorer I can see the assigned metadata and I can edit the metadata for the files but with that I cannot provide a consistent approach like the Managed Metadata Service in SharePoint.
The SharePoint Server will not replace the file server in the near future, because the file server is better to store long video/audio files and space-consuming application install packages.
To sum up: if you know about any kind of application which can provide similar capabilities for the NTFS file-system like the Managed Metadata Service of SharePoint please let me know.
Thank you for any information. (I searched the Internet for solution but I did not find anything).
Have you looked at programs like RSD Glass or Record Lion?

The fact that you can’t find much in the way of the capability you’re seeking is the whole point of Content Management systems and why organizations migrate content out of the file servers! You stated you have SharePoint, and you’ve even managed to come up with some level of maturity in deciding managed metadata within SP; just go the extra step and do a content inventory on your file servers and move the content you need to keep into SP with the appropriate metadata.
